Community visits are a great way to meet and hear more about the positive work people are doing across the Tukituki electorate, along with helping advocate for those who need support on local issues.
Labour MP Jacinda Ardern and I joined Hastings Girls High School students at their new Te Rourou cafeteria last week. This is an exciting student-led project with great support from the school, that provides healthy affordable food options and a breakfast club every morning – junk food is out!
A highlight for me was catching up with two of the Year 13 leaders, who went to Frimley Primary with my children, and listening to their impressive achievements and future plans – congratulations and good luck Gabby and Inderpreet.
In Flaxmere we joined Kimi Ora Community School to help prepare for Matariki celebrations. The school, once struggling for survival, is making transformational improvements to the lives and wellbeing of students who are thriving in their learning environment. One of the first priorities has been ensuring all children are healthy and have good nutrition with breakfasts and $1 lunches so they can learn, achieve and enjoy school.
Finally, we met with PAFT (Parents as First Teachers) which, after 25 years, is closing in September after the Government cut its funding. PAFT provides free in-home visits to support parents. You can find out more and sign their petition at www.change.org (search PAFT).
Please do get in touch if you would like me to visit so I can learn more about what you and your organisation or business is up to, or if you have an issue where you need Labour Tukituki’s support and advocacy.
